The conviction of Finnish parliamentarian Päivi Räsänen over a Christian pamphlet published 20 years ago exposes the dramatic paradox of modern Europe, which, under the cover of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) and in the name of fighting “hate speech,” is ruthlessly suppressing free speech and introducing a new form of ideological censorship. What the European Court of Human Rights does in this case will tell us everything.
For years, Finland has been widely perceived as an oasis of Scandinavian liberalism, tolerance, and unfettered freedom. Yet it was precisely there, in a country of picturesque lakes and cutting-edge technology, that one of the most dramatic and telling trials of our time unfolded.
On the defendants’ bench sat Päivi Räsänen – a physician, a member of parliament continuously since 1995, a former Minister of the Interior (2011–2015), and, privately, a mother of five and grandmother of twelve. Her only “crime” was to publicly and peacefully express her Christian religious convictions.
The case, described by her defenders as a “modern-day heresy trial” or “secular blasphemy law,” exposes deep cracks in the foundations of modern Europe. It shows how, under the guise of fighting hatred, traditional thought is being eliminated from public discourse and freedom of speech is being replaced by state dictates.
The Substance of the Case: A Tweet, a Pamphlet, and Words on “X”
It all began in June 2019, when Päivi Räsänen published a post on X addressed to the leaders of her own Finnish Lutheran Church. She asked how the Church’s official sponsorship of the “LGBT Pride” festival could be reconciled with the teachings of Scripture. She attached a photograph of a passage from the Bible – Romans 1:24–27, which condemns homosexual acts as sin.
The parliamentarian’s statements on social media at the time went considerably further and forcefully highlighted the looming crisis of freedom of expression. In September 2019, Räsänen wrote on the “X” platform:
“How can the church’s doctrinal foundation, the Bible, be compatible with lifting up shame and sin as a subject of pride?”

In another post that same month, she categorically opposed the stigmatization of traditional views:
She also published a post in Finnish, citing a medical article and challenging prevailing political dogmas:
*Many claims circulating around this issue are not based on research, but on LGBT politics and the Seta organization. Heredity/genetics does not determine homosexuality.*
Räsänen clearly understood the dynamics of the coming changes, as she summed up in an interview with words that today sound prophetic:
“The more Christians remain silent on controversial issues, the narrower the space for freedom of speech becomes.”
– she wrote on “X” in 2019.
One Question Brought the Entire Machinery Down on Räsänen
That one question about Pride and Christian doctrine set the machinery of the state prosecution in motion. Police launched an investigation, which prosecutors decided to expand to Räsänen’s entire record of public activity.
They dug out an old pamphlet titled “He Created Them Male and Female – Homosexual Relationships Challenge the Christian Understanding of Humanity”, which Räsänen had written for her church in… 2004. In this text, published more than two decades ago, the author described homosexuality, among other things, as a “disorder of psychosexual development,” while at the same time emphasizing the dignity and equality of all people before God.
Bishop Juhan Pohjola, who had published the pamphlet at the time, was also prosecuted.
In April 2021, the Finnish prosecutor general charged Räsänen with three counts of “agitation against a minority group.” Paradoxically, the basis for the prosecution was a provision of the Finnish Criminal Code located in a chapter devoted to… war crimes and crimes against humanity. She faced a possible sentence of up to two years in prison.
Who Is Päivi Räsänen? The Broader Context of Her Views
Päivi Räsänen is not a “random provocateur,” but one of the most respected and recognizable figures on the Finnish political scene. She is a physician by training, led the Christian Democrats for years (2004–2015), and served as Finland’s Minister of the Interior.
Her views are deeply rooted in traditional Christian teaching and a biological understanding of humanity. As a physician and politician, she has consistently opposed abortion and the redefinition of marriage, maintaining that marriage is exclusively a union between a woman and a man.
In her writings, she frequently appealed both to the authority of Scripture and to classical concepts from medicine and developmental psychology, which in the new secular reality were deemed an unacceptable violation of political correctness.
Räsänen’s Judicial Odyssey and the March 2026 Verdict
Räsänen’s journey through the Finnish justice system has been a true legal marathon. Both the Helsinki District Court (in March 2022) and the Court of Appeal (in November 2023) unanimously acquitted Räsänen and Bishop Pohjola of all charges. The lower courts held that “it is not the role of a district court to interpret biblical concepts” and that freedom of speech and religion require an overriding social interest before the state may interfere with them.
Nevertheless, the Finnish prosecution, displaying Stakhanovite determination, appealed to the Supreme Court. The hearing took place in October 2025, and the verdict was handed down on March 26, 2026, producing a partial but extremely dangerous ruling. The Supreme Court unanimously acquitted Räsänen over the tweet quoting Romans, finding that it did not meet the elements of a criminal offense. However, by a 3–2 vote, it convicted her and Bishop Pohjola over the 2004 pamphlet for “making available and keeping in public circulation a text that insults a group.”
The court imposed a fine of 20 daily units on the parliamentarian and, most alarmingly, ordered the removal and destruction of the disputed passages. A judicial decision to censor and order the destruction of written words in 21st-century Europe sounds like a grim historical joke.
A Seven-Year Trial as Punishment in Itself
Why was the 2004 pamphlet dragged out only fifteen years later? The answer reveals the ruthless mechanism of retroactive censorship. Although the pamphlet was written long before so-called hate-speech laws came into force and long before the pseudo-scientific gender ideology that has spread even through universities, prosecutors argued that the mere fact that the text remained available online in 2019 and 2020 constituted a “continuing offense.” In this way, no one can ever be certain about their past or their future liability for anything.
During the investigation, Räsänen also endured grueling 13-hour police interrogations, during which investigators questioned her about… theology, asking her to interpret Romans and explain what she meant by the concepts of “sin” and “shame.”
Although police offered her an amicable resolution of the case on condition that she remove the texts, the parliamentarian categorically refused.
As Räsänen’s defenders at ADF International have noted, in cases like these, “the process itself becomes the punishment.” Even if ultimately acquitted, being dragged through the courts for seven years, suffering reputational damage, stress, and enormous financial costs is intended to create a so-called chilling effect.
The message to the rest of society is clear: “Look what we did to a former Minister of the Interior. If you dare to speak your mind out loud, the same thing will happen to you.”
Defenders’ Reactions, the ECtHR, and the British Ban
The reactions of free-speech advocates around the world were unequivocal. Paul Coleman of ADF International described the conviction over the decades-old pamphlet as a “drastic example of state censorship” that undermines the foundations of a democratic society. Kristen Waggoner, meanwhile, warned that no democracy is immune to the erosion of fundamental freedoms. American lawmakers openly warned that Finnish law had begun to function like a secular blasphemy law, paving the way for the persecution of people of different faiths.
Defenders consistently pointed to the landmark ruling of the European Court of Human Rights in Handyside v. the United Kingdom (1976), in which the ECtHR held that freedom of expression protects not only ideas that are received favorably or regarded with indifference, but also those that “offend, shock or disturb the state or any sector of the population.”
As of the time of writing, Räsänen continues her fight. In July 2026, she filed a monumental, approximately 610-page application with the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, alleging that Finland had violated Article 9 (freedom of religion) and Article 10 (freedom of expression) of the European Convention on Human Rights.
Meanwhile, the system has already begun to stigmatize her internationally – in July 2026, British authorities refused to grant her permission to enter the country, a decision the parliamentarian directly links to her conviction.
The EU Gag: ACTA, DSA, and What Comes Next?
The Finnish parliamentarian’s case is not an isolated incident, but a laboratory in which mechanisms of control are being tested that are intended to encompass everyone on the continent.
The past remembers the massive civic resistance to the ACTA agreement, which was intended to restrict freedom on the internet. Today, its spirit is returning in a far more dangerous, systemic form – the Digital Services Act (DSA), the EU’s Digital Services Act.
Under the DSA, censorship decisions made in one member state can directly affect what online content is permitted throughout the Union. Tech giants, working hand in hand with the European Commission, are implementing procedures for removing alleged “hate speech” with no transparency whatsoever.
Worse still, the European Commission is consistently pushing to classify “hate speech” as a crime at the EU level, placing it alongside such serious crimes as terrorism and human trafficking. In December 2025, the European Commission imposed its first massive fine on the X platform (approximately €120 million), citing insufficient efforts to combat disinformation and hate speech.
Fortunately, resistance is emerging – including in Poland, where President Nawrocki vetoed part of the national legislation implementing the DSA in 2026, citing the protection of constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech.
The Landscape of Continental Censorship
The scale of the suppression of free speech in Europe between 2020 and 2026 is staggering. Governments across the continent are increasingly turning to the police apparatus to pursue politically incorrect ideas:
In Germany, police and prosecutors are pursuing thousands of cases over online statements, while politicians hire specialized law firms that file lawsuits en masse against critical internet users. The number of state investigations involving insults against politicians rose from 2,600 in 2023 to nearly 4,800 in 2025. This has included bizarre police raids on private homes over the sharing of memes, as in the case of the satirical image “Schwachkopf Professional” targeting Minister Robert Habeck, as well as heavy fines for calling the chancellor “lying Fritz.”
In the United Kingdom, more than 60,000 people have been arrested over posts and online activity during the past five years, with more than 12,000 convicted. Police pursue people over trivial posts in private chats or merely watching “politically incorrect” videos on TikTok.
A striking symbol of Britain’s authoritarian drift was the arrest at Heathrow Airport in September 2025 of well-known screenwriter Graham Linehan by five armed police officers over posts on “X” criticizing gender ideology. The investigation was eventually dropped, and police had to pay him £25,000 in compensation from taxpayers’ money. Another example is the conviction of Lucy Connolly, who was sentenced to 31 months in prison for an online post calling for deportations following the Southport riots. Meanwhile, author J.K. Rowling continues her relentless battle under Scotland’s Hate Crime Act 2024, challenging police to arrest her for referring to transgender people according to their biological sex.
In Poland, a mother was convicted for expressing a negative opinion about a doctor who urged her to abort a healthy child. Only President Karol Nawrocki’s pardon of Weronika Krawczyk brought an end to the mother’s ordeal and her fight for the truth. Convicted over an online warning about a gynecologist who had incorrectly diagnosed her unborn son with Down syndrome and urged her to have an abortion, the woman refused to apologize and spent years dealing with a court sentence that threatened her with detention. The pardon issued in April 2026 waived her community-service sentence, the obligation to apologize, and the conviction itself, restoring a sense of justice to the mother of three whose child was ultimately born healthy.

There are countless more examples of such “freedom, as we understand it.”
J.D. Vance in Munich and a Warning from Across the Atlantic
This systemic erosion of freedom in Europe has not escaped the attention of outside observers. On February 15, 2025, during the prestigious Munich Security Conference, newly elected U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance delivered a speech that shook Europe’s political elites.
Vance accused European governments of betraying fundamental values, resorting to systemic censorship, ignoring the will of voters, and – most strikingly – persecuting Christians on the continent. He called these developments the greatest threat to Europe’s future.
The German press described his words as a “blow with a sledgehammer” and a “cold shower for Europe,” while criticizing Vance for what it described as an attempt to import America’s culture war into Europe. President Donald Trump, however, enthusiastically endorsed the speech, warning that “Europe must be careful” because it is willingly giving up freedom of speech.

The Utopia of Correct Consensus
What do all these facts tell us about the intentions of the forces currently governing Europe? The future of our continent appears extraordinarily bleak.
Europe – once proud of its intellectual heritage, founded on the clash of ideas, debate, and the pursuit of objective truth – is now voluntarily placing itself under the gag of political correctness.
Have we not moved from the extremes of the bloody conflicts and wars that tore our continent apart for centuries into another, almost equally dangerous extreme: a false and politically correct consensus, enforced through silence, fear of the police, and the suppression of independent thought? Is the price of this false “peace and quiet” to be the complete surrender of freedom of speech – and, ultimately, of the human spirit itself?
This brings us to a fundamental, indeed dramatic, question:
If elected politicians chosen by society, such as Päivi Räsänen, protected by parliamentary immunity and representing millions of voters, cannot freely speak, for example, about their own faith and deepest convictions, then who in the Europe of the future will be able to?
The answer is terrifying: no one.
Freedom of speech is ceasing to be an inherent right and becoming a license rationed out by officials in Brussels, Helsinki, or London. If European societies do not awaken from this slumber of political correctness, we will wake up in a world where quoting the Bible, classical literature, or even simply stating biological facts will be a crime punishable by armed police patrols.
Päivi Räsänen is now fighting before the ECtHR for the right of all of us to think.
